Roller Coaster Competition

Roller Coaster Competition

The Iowa Alpha Chapter at Iowa State University has been recognized nationally for the service projects that it has organized, and has taken the challenge of hosting a roller coaster competition for middle and high school students. Marc Hermon, an Urbandale High School teacher, started this competition in order to reach out to high school students who have an interest in mathematics, physics and engineering. The competition gives students an opportunity to apply theory to a project that is both fun and challenging.

This year's competition will be held on Thursday, April 1st, 2010 in the Howe Hall Atrium on the Iowa State University campus. Teams of four to eight are desirable, but more are certainly allowed. On the day of the event, participants may bring their own lunch if they choose; however, pizza and pop will be provided at minimal cost (for $3, you can get two slices of pizza and a can of pop). In addition, t-shirts can be ordered in advance for $10. Below are listed a few documents available for download. The roller coaster rules form will provide information and insight into the nature of the competition and should answer most of the questions that you may have. The third document listed is the judges scoring form. This form will be the one used during the competition, so it should be used to your advantage. If you have any further questions, please contact the TBP Project Officers (tbp-projects@iastate.edu).

Please fill out the online form to register your team for this year's Catapult Competition.  The competition is free to register for, however, if you would like a t-shirt, the cost is $10/person. If your team has an adult sponsor or advisor, they may also purchase a t-shirt for $10 but it is not required.  Please mail in the total amount of money for your team to the following address (make checks payable to Iowa Alpha Chapter, Tau Beta Pi):
